When Sean Mitchell walks through the halls of Royal Inland Hospital, it’s with a sense of gratitude and purpose. Years ago, he was a young patient here, receiving treatment for nephrotic syndrome, a condition that affects the kidneys. Today, he’s giving back as a dedicated volunteer in the Art & Norma James Pediatric Department.

Sean got involved through the Health Sciences Academy, a School District 73 program that gives high school students hands-on experience in the healthcare sector. While Sean had several volunteer opportunities to choose from within local healthcare, Royal Inland Hospital was a natural fit. Whether he’s welcoming families, assisting nurses, or offering company to young patients, Sean makes a real impact every shift. “My favourite part of volunteering is just knowing I’ve made someone’s day a little brighter,” he shares.

Now entering Grade 12, Sean plans to pursue kinesiology and eventually a career in sports medicine. His interest stems from his own experience navigating sports-related injuries and his love for cheerleading.

Sean’s story is proof that the care we give today can inspire tomorrow’s leaders in healthcare. We are so proud to have him as part of the RIH volunteer family and hope one day he returns as a valued member of the RIH medical team!
